Avaya Introduces New VoIP Products

Avaya has announced a major repositioning of its approach to enterprise voice networking.

Avaya has introduced 10 new VoIP products to its ECLIPS [Enterprise Class Internet Protocol Solutions] family of small, mid-size, and enterprise voice networking solutions including media servers, media gateways, and software.

Avaya's IP-PBX platform has a client/server system design and incorporates Avaya's Definity common equipment and terminals.

Manufacturing Information:  Avaya Media Server and Gateways are manufactured in Denver, CO

Media Servers

Both the S8700 and S8300 run on LINUX, which means that Avaya now has products running on every operating system.  The new servers run on LINUX, while the Definity ProLogix, G3si and G3r models run on Oryx/Pecos, a version of Unix originally developed by Bell Labs for the AT&T System 85.  Definity One and the IP600 run Windows 2000, Avaya's IP Office, targeted at the SME market, runs VXWorks.

Avaya chose LINUX to have access to the resources of the entire LINUX development communities, fixes, patches or enhancements.  They claim that LINUX is a more stable operating environment.

Avaya's new media servers use Ethernet NICs for connections to the Port network for control; the duplicated server (applies to the S8700); the LAN for adjunct and administrative access; and UPS monitoring.  The technology features:

Media Gateways

Avaya's announcement also included new media gateways-the G600 and G700.

Avaya's new media gateways are stackable, modular, configurable components that support optional form factors.  The technology supports all of the company's systems' applications and adjuncts including Call Center, CRM, CTI, Messaging, Mobility, Remote Worker/Office, Road Warrior and Voice Terminals.  The gateways are interoperable with H.323, H.248 and Q-SIG LAN/WAN data networks.

The platform components include:

Additional Media Gateways

Avaya also announced the MCCl and SCCl Media Gateways to give Definity G3si and G3r customers a migration path to the new client-server, IP-PBX design.  The MCCl and SCCl are renamed versions of the Definity Multicarrier and Single Carrier port cabinets.  The multi-carrier cabinet port network supports up to five MCCl carrier shelves; up to four SCCls can be stacked as a single Port Network cabinet.  Both port networks can work behind the S8700 using the new IPSI card for control signaling, while continuing to support all the traditional Definity port interface cards.

However, a new maintenance board is required to support the IPSI card.

Definity customers can migrate existing MMCl and SCCl equipment to the S8700 call telephony server platform by deactivating the System Processing Element (SPE), otherwise known as the common control complex.  Note that the MCC1 and SCC1 are not gateways per se; the Media Processing Board installed in the cabinet card slot performs the actual gateway functions.  The MCC1 and the SCC1 port carriers both list for $5,150.

Multimedia Messaging Server

Avaya has introduced Intuity Audix LX Multimedia Messaging Server, a LINUX-based low-end offering for enterprise voice, email and fax messaging.  The technology can integrate with nearly 100 different switches.  The server will support a maximum of 12 voice/FAX ports having 3 tip/ring analog boards with 4 ports each.  It will support 2 serial ports, a parallel port, 2 USB ports, and a 10/100 Ethernet port.

The system capacity includes 500 hours of storage, 1,000 mailboxes, 8 message networking ports, 12 voice/FAX ports, 1,000 users, and 32 simultaneous sessions.

Avaya announced it would extend its LINUX portfolio to the new Intuity Audix MultiMedia Messaging Server, which runs on any standard PC.  This application lists at $3,000 to $4,500.

S8100 Media Server

The S8100 media server, a server blade designed for SME customers, branch offices and work groups, contains a Pentium processor running a Windows 2000 server.  Operated in conjunction with Avaya's G600 media gateway, the server provides up to:

Avaya also has renamed the major components of its IP600 system.  The S8100 Media Server is the legacy Definity One/IP600 TN745 call-processor board, with identical messaging and systems management applications.  The S8100 Windows 2000 call-telephony blade is housed in the original IP600 cabinet, which has been renamed the G600 Media Gateway.

The Avaya S8100 Media Server is a server blade for small to mid-size customers, and for branch offices and work groups.

It contains a Pentium processor running Windows 2000 Server.

S8700 Media Server

Target Customers

The Avaya S8700 Media Server with Avaya G600 Media Gateway is targeted toward the medium-to-large enterprise space as an IP centric, stand-alone communications system. The Avaya S8700 Media Server for IP Connect is positioned to be a cost effective solution for the 450 -12,000 IP endpoint customers.

The S8700 offers increased port and call processing parameters from the legacy Definity ECS.  An S8700 complex can support up to 12,000 IP stations, and up to 4,000 analog/digital stations or trunks, or up to 36,000 digital stations and 8,000 trunks.

The S8700 is a true duplicated call telephony server complex that runs on LINUX.  When combined with the G600 media gateway, the server supports up to:

When paired with Avaya's MCC1 or SCC1 gateway, the S8700 supports up to:

In this configuration, the server scales up to:

When paired with the MCC1 or SCC1, the S8700 is available in Standard, High and Critical Reliability versions.  MCC1, SCCI and G700 gateways can be mixed when used with the S8700 server.

The Avaya S8700 Media Server is a true duplicated (fault tolerant) call telephony server complex running on a LINUX O/S.  The Media Server fits in a 19" data rack.  It is offered in two configurations:

When paired with the G600 Media Gateway, the S8700 supports up to:

The S8700 is a call-telephony server that comes in a dual-chassis, redundant configuration.  One server is always in active mode; the other is in hot standby.  There are two physical connections between the servers; an Ethernet link for arbitration and file synchronization, and a single-mode fiber link for duplication memory shadowing.

G600 Media Gateway

The G600 media gateway was designed for large, mixed IP and digital networks and distributed systems.  The G600 is a chassis-based, 19 inch rack mountable, 7u form factor design that takes blades.

The G600 is a modified IP600 cabinet.  The 19-inch, rack-mounted unit, has 10 port-card slots, and a 512-time-slot dual TDM bus for circuit-switched communications.  The G600 supports all Definity port interface circuit cards, but it works exclusively behind the S8700 server.  A G600 interfaces to the S8700 for control signaling via a new IP System Interface (IPSI) card, which lists for $7,500.

Up to four G600 cabinets can be configured as a single port network.  Up to 64 port networks can be configured behind a S8700, and only one of the four G600s in this configuration requires the IPSI card.

However, there are no direct links between G600s configured in a single port network cluster.  Communications and control signaling is via the LAN, using the Definity CLAN and IP Media Processing Board.
