Voice Mail Backup

by Steve Autor

We build our own voice mail systems using Key Voice software, typically their DOS platform as it's very reliable. A year ago we gave up on tape backups because the customers wouldn't rotate the backup tapes so when the hard drive does fail, the tapes are usually shot.

Since hard drives are so inexpensive now, we started adding a second hard drive, and write a backup routine batch file to copy voice files onto the backup drive once a week. We already have a backup copy of the programs on the disk, so that in the event of a failure of the primary drive, we merely move the plugs inside the machine to the backup drive and the customer is back up and running without us having to reprogram etc.
